Rubén Acuña González

His early childhood

Rubén Acuña González is originally from Tampico, Mexico where he was born in 2002 and raised for 9 years. In December 2011, he moved to the United States with his brother and parents and have since resided in The Woodlands, Texas.

His years at Tomball High School

Rubén graduated from Tomball High School in 2020 and is currently a second-year student studying Music Performance as a Percussionist at the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin.

During his high school experience, Rubén was very fortunate to study and be under the direction of excellent teachers and directors such as Rob Sullens, Zach Harston, Andy Filipiak, and some other extraordinary individuals.

He was very fortunate to be surrounded by a wealth of knowledge, but regardless of the resources, still had to put in the work to earn what Rubén always dreamed of.

Rubén earned the first chair spot in the TMEA 5A All-State Symphonic band in 2017 and later on competed in the 6A route to then earn a first chair spot in the 6A All-State Symphonic band in 2019

He was also involved in the Tomball High School winter percussion ensemble throughout all my years of junior high and high school in which we went on to compete at TCGC and WGI competitions yearly.

“We were very fortunate to be crowned TCGC State champions 6 times in a row and then go on to compete at the 2017 WGI World Championships competing in Scholastic Concert Open class in which we claimed the gold medal.” he said.

The percussion ensemble then went on to compete in Scholastic Concert World class in 2019 at World Championships and finished 4th place.

Ruben as part of the Tomball High School Cougar Pride Band Percussion Ensemble won the 2017 WGI Percussion Wold Championship in Dayton, Ohio during the April 20-22, 2017 competition, winning the 2017 WGI Percussion Scholastic Open Class World Championship with a score of 95.4

After that, the City of Tomball, Texas proclaimed Monday May 1st, 2017 as the Tomball High School Cougar Pride Percussion Ensemble 2017 – WGI Percussion World Champion Day (click here).

As well, Ruben as part of the Tomball High School Percussion Ensemble was congratulated by The House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature on winning the Scholastic Concert Open Class title at the 2017 Winter Guard International Percussion World Championship (click here)

Rubén was also in the marching band as a snare drummer throughout his high school years and drumline captain for his last 2 years.

After the great experiences and fortunate opportunities for leadership, Rubén was nominated and given the John Philip Sousa Award at his last band banquet.

Latter years at the University of Texas at Austin

Rubén is now studying with Dr. Burritt and Ivan Treviño at UT Austin, and is looking forward to what he can offer to the UT percussion studio as well as what they’ll have in store for him.

NANCY CURTIS

“Rubén excelled in percussion and promptly developed a reputation as a standout. In 2017, Ruben made 1st chair for the Texas All-State Symphonic Band as a freshman. He repeated this victory again as a junior in 2019. These triumphs serve as further evidence of Ruben’s exceptional talent and dedication. ”
