Austin, Texas – On March 1st, 2023, percussionist Ruben Acuna Gonzalez wowed the audience at The University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music with his junior recital, “Reflections of Passion.”

Ruben Acuna, a talented young musician, and percussionist showcased his skills and artistry in a diverse program that featured works by contemporary composers David Skidmore, Alejandro Viñao, David Crowell, and Andy Akiho.

The performance opened with Skidmore’s “Goodnight Noises Everywhere” (2019), a percussion quartet that sets the mood for the evening. Acuna then led his ensemble through Viñao’s “Burrit Variations (2012),” a virtuosic work that highlights the intricacies of the marimba.

Next the audience was delighted with Acuna’s performance of Crowell’s “Music for Percussion Quartet I. Fluctuation” (2015). The complex, rhythmically driven work demonstrated the group’s technical mastery and dynamic range.

The highlight of the evening undoubtedly was the closing out of the program, Akiho’s “Amethyst” (2021), a stunning work that showcased Acuna’s sensitivity and nuance as a performer. Acuna was joined by guest performers Davin Cai on steel pans, Luke Fain on piano, and Margaret Parker on cello.

Acuna’s technical prowess and musicality were on full display throughout the performance, leaving the audience in awe of his skill and passion.

When asked about his experience, Acuna said, “It was an honor to perform with such talented musicians and share my love of percussion with the audience. I’m grateful for the opportunity to perform at UT and showcase the hard work and dedication of myself and my fellow musicians.”

The audience left the recital hall with a newfound appreciation for the artistry and beauty of percussion music.
